Dan on the Short List
Suckling Transport Fleet Engineer, Dan Bauckham, has been shortlisted for the Fleet Engineer of the Year award in this year’s Motor Transport industry Awards ceremony. Dan is joined on the shortlist by Darren O'Donnell, of Coca-Cola Enterprises Limited and Paul Pinfold, of Indesit Company.
The winner will be announced on Wednesday 6th July 2011 at The Grosvenor House, London.
Motor Transport magazine reported that the judges were so impressed by Dan that one said he wished he had a fleet engineer just like him! The judges added that Dan was clearly a well qualified professional and had done the job he had been brought in to do.
Good Luck on the 6th Dan!!
Double Winners
The England team have been in sparkling form. They became the first team to complete the 1mKm Challenge winners twice in the same year.
Having clocked up one million kilometres of incident-free driving in March, the safety kings hit the magical 1m km target again earlier this month.
England Team Captain Alan Archer will make his double trophy collection at the Company’s 1mKm Challenge Day at Worcester on 29th June 2011. He will also collect a donation of £1,500 for their nominated charity Transaid.
Winning teams collect a prize of £1,000 plus £500 for subsequent wins.
Team members will each receive special 1mKm pens for the first 1mKm and key purse for the second. Well done England!
New drop-in Centres
Following an improvements review, the Company will be consulting with its workforce in an effort to improve communications.
Whilst formal HSE committees are in place and all employees attend a quarterly toolbox talk on safety issues, many drivers felt they would prefer more one-to-one contact with managers.
As a recognition agreement is in place with Unite, formal negotiation and consultation processes must take place with that union. However, drivers have expressed a wish to have greater access to managers to discuss non-safety related issues, or matters not related to terms and conditions of employment.
A survey will be conducted to seek the further views of employees, although a quarterly drop-in session at each operating centre seems to be the most favoured suggestion. Individual managers, from a management team which would include the Managing Director, Fleet Engineer, Operations Manager, Safety Manager, General Manager & DGSA, Regional Managers and Transport Managers, are likely to visit terminals every three months for meetings with individuals or groups of drivers.
ETSC in Oviedo
Managing Director, Peter Larner recently addressed a European Transport Safety Council seminar at the Asturius Institute for the prevention of accidents in Northern Spain.
The presentation updated 150 invited guests on the Company’s progress with the Zero Incident Project, which Peter spoke about in Brussels last year.
The publication of a book containing 5 Thematic Reports and 5 Factsheets, including one on the ZIP initiative was released at the event.
Perfect Delivery
A perfect delivery demonstration we conducted at Shell Swansea Bay on 20th April.
Jeff Palmer - who is a bit camera shy unfortunately - presenting to site staff from Shell Tonypandy, Shell Halfway, Shell Crickhowell, Shell Cwmbran and of course Shell Swansea Bay.
Around 14 site staff attended in total with the emphasis on safe delivery (special attention paid to the correct completion of the Petroleum Delivery Certificate) and forecourt practices.
TankShare Service & New TankShare Customers
TankShare Service
Operations Manager, Shaun Rees-Brown and Fleet Engineer Dan Bauckham will be making a second trip to the West Country next month to meet potential TankShare customers in that area.
The location and number of trucks are still to be decided but it is hoped that Suckling Transport will be operating a service in that area by October 2011.
New TankShare Customers
Three new companies joined the long list of TankShare customers recently.

Avonmouth Safe Terminal
Mick Mills, Manager of Avonmouth Fuel Terminal congratulated our Avonmouth drivers for reaching a safety mile stone (100 days all safe - across all terminals).
Our Avonmouth-based drivers already hold the distinction of being the only operating centre team to achieve the 1mKm Challenge. They now look like clocking up a second million kilometres in the next month to claim another £500 for their charity, plus another round of prizes and a second trophy.
Welcome to Worcester Race Day
Suckling Transport is pleased to sponsor the eighth running of the Suckling Transport Handicap Chase at Worcester today. We are also pleased to welcome our guests from Airport Energy, Andrew Gray & Sons, Bayford & Company,
BP, Co-operative, Downstream Fuel Association, Virtual Risk Manager, ConocoPhillips, Consultancy Solutions, Coryton Advanced Fuels, Fuel Oils News, GB Oils, Harvest Energy, Linton Fuels, Marsh, OAMPS, Shell UK, The Fuel Trading Company and Wessex Fuels. We also welcome Dean Crane from our Group Company Harris DAF and his guests, representing truck operators in the South East.
Our guests also include Alan Archer, who is the Captain of the England team that recently achieved the Suckling Transport 1mKm Challenge by completing one million kilometres without any kind of accident or safety incident.
Alan will receive a cheque for £1,000 for the team’s nominated charity Transaid. Transaid is an international UK
development charity that aims to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods across Africa and the developing world through creating better transport. It does this by building local skills and knowledge to make transport safer, cheaper, cleaner and more effective, ensuring better access to the essentials for everyday life such as healthcare, education and training, and economic opportunities.

Transaid’s history goes back over 25 years and is strongly supported by the European Transport and Logistics Industry. Through combining this expertise with our longstanding experience of working in the developing world, we partner with organisations in the public and private sector including local community organisations, governments, institutions and donors to build capability and achieve our aims.
This collaborative approach enables Transaid to provide innovative solutions to some of the key challenges facing transport and development today. Transaid was founded by Save the Children and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and its Patron is HRH The Princess Royal.
In addition to the £1,000 1mKm Challenge prize, Transaid is also our chosen charity for the day and any money raised by our guests today will be added to that donation.
As usual horses in the sponsored race will be auctioned and the winning ‘owner’ wins a special case of South African wine.
